A Patient's Story: Learning How To Live With Diabetes

Marisol has uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes, brought on by a combination of genetics, poor diet, and little exercise. Last time, she was with us for one month with renal failure. She has no insurance and no supportive family nearby. During her last hospital stay, Marisol was put on a new diabetes protocol we’re implementing with the help of Rush University Medical Center.

She's learning to manage her diabetes, working with a counselor from our Outpatient Diabetes Center and one of our Physical therapists is helping her with a recurring foot problem.

In the Latino and African American communities we serve and throughout the country, diabetes is the most disastrous diseases of our time, affecting millions of people like Marisol. Everyday, we treat advanced complications of diabetes including heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure to name a few.

The good news is Type 2 diabetes is preventable and manageable. The bad news is, many of those living in our service area don’t understand the disease, wait too long for treatment, or don’t even know they have diabetes.

We continue working to change that. With partners like the Cook County Bureau of Health services, Chicago Department of Public Health, Rush University Medical Center, and others, our patients receive a quality of care most hospitals our size can’t provide.
